Shri Manata Bhau Saheb RangariGanpatiIntroduction:Lokmanya Tilak was inspired by Bhausaheb Rangari, whobesidesrunning a dispensary would also help freedom fighters bystoringtheir arms and weaponsThe forerunner of celebrating Ganeshotsav as a Social festivalinthe Year 1892, the Srimant Bhausaheb Rangari Ganapati has etcheditsname in the history books for being the first sarvajanikGaneshotsavmandal in the country.Bhausaheb Laxman Javale alias Bhau Rangari was theroyalphysician or ‘raj-vaidya’ and ran a charitable dispensary athistwo-storey home behind Shaniwarwada. Javale family was involvedindyeing the shalus (ethnic Maharshtrian sarees), which broughtthemthe family name ‘Rangari’ and the lane where they livedbecamefamous as shalukaracha bol (alley of the shalu artisans).Bhau Rangari, besides running the dispensary, alsohelpedrevolutionaries of the freedom struggle, stored their armsandweapons, so that they could move around without theBritishersbeing suspicious of them.Krushnaji Kashinath Kajgiwale (better known as NanasahebKhajgiwale)once discussed about a public celebration ofGaneshotsav he hadwitnessed in Gwalior with his friend BhauRangari. This led the twoto organise a meeting at the latter’shome, which was attended byMaharshi Annasaheb Patwardhan,Balasaheb Natu, Dagdusheth Halwai andothers, at which it wasdecided to start a public celebration ofGanesh festival inPune.Soon, three Ganapati idols were installed publicly in thefirstyear – Srimant Bhausaheb Rangari Ganapati, GanaptraoGhotavadekarGanapati and Nanasaheb Khajgiwale Ganapati. All thethree Ganapatiswere immersed with a grand procession and LokmanyaTilak liked theidea. He backed it with an editorial in hispublication Kesari,following which Tilak started his own sarvajanikGaneshotsav in1894.Kashinath Thakurji Jadhav, Bhau Rangari’s disciple, who wasmorelike his son, carried forward the tradition of publiccelebrationafter his death in 1905. All the legendary figures,includingLokmanya Tilak, Bipinchandra Pal, Chaphekar brothers,DadasahebKhaparde, Shivram Mahadev Paranjape, Pandit Madan MohanMalviya, KBHedgewar, Veer Savarkar, PK Atre, Jayantrao Tilak,AbasahebMujumdar and others delivered lectures at Bhau RangariGanapatifestival.Much later, Bhau Rangari’s son-in-law, Parshuram Balaji NikamandPrabhakar Neelkanth Shelar continued the custom of the Mandalnevercollecting any donations or subscriptions from residents, andwasrun on voluntary contributions from soldiers and theenthusiastsworking for the Mandal.Milind or Baba Dafal is the president for the Mandal,whoundertakes all the tasks.
